The Future of BMW Electrification: Neue Klasse, the Next BMW EVs, and What They Mean for the Bay Area
BMW is in the middle of the biggest product change in its history. Here is what BMW has actually confirmed about the Neue Klasse platform, which electric models come next, and how the roadmap plays out for drivers in Berkeley and the East Bay.
Quick answer: what is the next BMW EV?
The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive is the first Neue Klasse model, and BMW's official US launch is September 25, 2026, with some dealers beginning early deliveries. Next up is the all-electric BMW i3 sedan: US reservations open September 29, 2026 with a $1,000 deposit, pricing hasn't been announced, and BMW targets a US launch in the first half of 2027. The iX5 60 xDrive (the electric version of the new X5) is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. BMW has also confirmed a hydrogen fuel-cell iX5 for series production in 2028, though US availability for that model has not been confirmed.
What Neue Klasse Actually Is
"Neue Klasse" (New Class) is the name BMW gives to its next generation of vehicle architecture, design, software, and electric drive technology. The name deliberately echoes the 1960s BMW sedans that rescued the company and defined the sports-sedan formula. This time the reset is electric first: the first two Neue Klasse models, the iX3 Sports Activity Vehicle and the i3 sedan, are fully electric and built on a platform that was never designed around a combustion engine.
The technology does not stay in those two cars. BMW has said that by 2027 Neue Klasse technologies will appear across 40 new models and model updates, and that the technology leap will reach the entire BMW portfolio regardless of drive type. That is why the updated 7 Series and the new X5, both of which still offer gasoline engines, carry Neue Klasse hardware and software too.
Those four numbers come from BMW's own description of its sixth-generation (Gen6) eDrive technology. BMW says both range and charging speed rise by 30 percent over the current generation, with some models seeing more.
Inside the Gen6 Hardware
Most of the gains come from a few engineering decisions working together. Here is how the new system compares with the BMW EVs on the road today, such as the i4, i5, iX, and i7.
| Area | Current BMW EVs (Gen5) | Neue Klasse (Gen6) |
|---|---|---|
| Battery cell format | Prismatic cells in modules | New BMW cylindrical cells fitted directly into the battery housing |
| Battery packaging | Separate pack in the floor | Battery housing forms part of the body structure |
| Voltage | 400V-class system | 800V system |
| Peak DC charging | Varies by model | Up to 400 kW on the iX3 and i3; up to 460 kW on the iX5 60 xDrive |
| Energy management | Distributed control units | BMW Energy Master, developed in-house, as the central control unit for the battery |
| Charging port (US) | CCS1, adapter needed at Tesla Superchargers (the i5 moved to native NACS from March 2026 production, per BMW-focused reporting) | Native NACS port on the iX3, i3, and iX5 |
| Bidirectional charging | Not offered | Hardware-capable; rollout depends on market |

The Four "Superbrains" and the Heart of Joy
The less visible half of Neue Klasse is its electronics. BMW replaced a web of separate control units with four high-performance computers it calls "Superbrains," which together deliver more than 20 times the computing power of the previous vehicle generation.
Heart of Joy (driving dynamics)
Combines drivetrain and chassis control in one unit for the first time, managing drive, brakes, recuperation, charging, and steering. BMW says it reacts in under a millisecond, about ten times faster than previous control units. For a driver, that means sharper traction and brake-blending control, the part of the "Ultimate Driving Machine" promise that has to survive the switch to electric.
Automated driving
Consolidates what used to be four separate control units into a single computer. Putting perception and assistance functions on one unit is the foundation BMW is building its future driver-assistance features on, and it can be improved through over-the-air updates.
Infotainment (BMW Operating System X)
Runs Panoramic iDrive: BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects information across the base of the windshield, a 3D head-up display, and a new central display. The same system appears in the new X5 and iX5.
Core vehicle functions
Handles access, climate and comfort, lighting, and over-the-air software updates. BMW says up to 100 vehicle functions and about 50 sensors connect to this single unit.

What's Confirmed vs. What's Still Speculation
A lot of what gets written about future BMW EVs comes from spy photos and supplier leaks. Here is what BMW has officially confirmed and what it hasn't.
Confirmed by BMW
iX3 50 xDrive US launch and pricing; i3 sedan production in Munich, US reservations from September 29, 2026, and a targeted US launch in the first half of 2027; iX5 60 xDrive pricing and Q1 2027 timing; Neue Klasse technology in 40 new and updated models by 2027; an i3 Touring (wagon) to be built in Munich; iX5 Hydrogen production in 2028.
Announced, but details pending
BMW's first fully electric M car, which leadership has placed within the 2027 product push; US pricing and trim lineup for the i3 sedan; whether the i3 Touring and iX5 Hydrogen will be sold in the US; when US owners get bidirectional home charging.
Reports only
Model names and production dates for future Neue Klasse variants such as a new iX1 or iX4 come from press reports and leaks, not BMW announcements. Treat any specific date or spec for them as unconfirmed until BMW publishes it.
Technology-Open: Why BMW Isn't Going All-Electric Overnight
BMW's strategy differs from brands that set a hard end date for combustion engines. BMW calls it technology openness: gasoline, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen drivetrains developed side by side, because charging infrastructure, energy prices, and regulations vary widely by region. Former CEO Oliver Zipse, who handed over to Milan Nedeljković in May 2026, argued publicly against putting an end date on combustion, and the new X5 shows the idea in practice. BMW says it is the first model offering five drivetrain types worldwide: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and, from 2028, hydrogen fuel cell. The US lineup BMW has announced includes the gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric versions.
For a Berkeley shopper, this matters in a practical way. You don't have to choose between the newest BMW technology and the drivetrain that fits your life. An iX5 and a gasoline X5 share the same Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X, so the choice comes down to how and where you drive, not which car gets the better screen.
What It Means for Bay Area Drivers
Charging gets simpler
BMW EVs gained access to Tesla's North American Supercharger network on December 10, 2025. Current CCS-port models such as the i4, iX, and i7 need a BMW-approved adapter (details are on BMW USA's Supercharger page). The iX3, i3, and iX5 have a native NACS port, so no adapter is needed. For local options, see our Berkeley public EV charging map.
Road trips without the planning
A drive from Berkeley to Lake Tahoe runs roughly 175 to 190 miles each way on I-80 or US-50, depending on which shore you're headed to. With range estimates above 400 miles (EPA for the iX3, BMW preliminary for the iX5) and 400 kW-plus peak charging, that trip goes from careful planning to one short stop at most, and Napa or Sonoma day trips don't need any charging at all.
Bidirectional charging: capable, not yet here
BMW says Gen6 cars can act as home energy storage. BMW's first vehicle-to-home setup, which pairs a Neue Klasse car with the BMW Wallbox Professional and a home energy system, is launching in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands in late 2026. BMW has not announced a US launch, so it isn't a reason to buy yet for PG&E customers.
BMW and PG&E have history
BMW's ChargeForward smart-charging program began in 2015 with Bay Area BMW i3 drivers who were PG&E customers, and BMW and PG&E expanded it in 2021 to cover all BMW EVs and plug-in hybrids. Check with BMW or PG&E for current enrollment terms before you count on incentives.
On regulations: California's Advanced Clean Cars II rule, which would have phased new-car sales in the state to 100 percent zero-emission vehicles by 2035, depended on a federal waiver that Congress revoked with a Congressional Review Act resolution signed in June 2025. California and other states are challenging that in court, and the case is ongoing. BMW's roadmap doesn't depend on how the case ends. Its technology-open plan keeps plug-in hybrids and gasoline models alongside the new EVs either way.
Buy Now or Wait? A Decision Guide
New technology is coming, but that doesn't make the current lineup a bad buy. Here's how we'd frame it for East Bay drivers.
| If you… | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Need an EV now, or your lease ends soon | A current i4, i5, iX, or i7 | Proven Gen5 cars with Supercharger access via adapter, and you can drive one this week |
| Want the newest tech in a compact SAV | iX3 50 xDrive | First Neue Klasse model, official US launch September 25, 2026 with some dealers delivering early, native NACS, estimated range of up to 434 miles |
| Prefer a sedan and can wait | i3 sedan | Neue Klasse in a sedan body. US reservations open September 29, 2026 ($1,000 deposit), with a US launch targeted for the first half of 2027. Pricing is not yet announced |
| Need a midsize family SUV | iX5 60 xDrive or X5 50e xDrive | Both arrive in Q1 2027, offering electric or plug-in hybrid in the same body |
| Are curious about hydrogen | Wait for BMW's US announcement | iX5 Hydrogen production starts in 2028. US sales and fueling access are unconfirmed |

Expert Tips From Our EV Team
- Judge a BMW EV by what you can drive today. The Gen5 cars on our lot are fully supported and still getting software updates. A better car arriving later doesn't make a good car worse.
- Plan home charging before you choose a model.A Level 2 charger at home covers most East Bay commuting in an i4 or an iX3 alike. Our BMW EV ownership guide for Berkeley walks through installation, PG&E rate plans, and public charging.
- Read range claims carefully.BMW publishes EPA-procedure estimates, and figures can differ by wheel and tire. The iX3's 434-mile estimate applies to 20-inch summer tires; BMW lists 383 miles on all-season tires.
- Ask about the charging port.Native NACS on Neue Klasse cars means no adapter at Tesla sites, while current models need one. Factor that into your weekend-trip plans.
- Get on an interest list early.New-model allocation is limited at launch. Telling us what you want helps us contact you as soon as arrival details are firm.
