An M car belongs at an authorized BMW center that follows Condition Based Service and performs the M-only 1,200-mile running-in service. Below: the break-in rules, what BMW Ultimate Care covers, how track days change the service plan, and the recalls current M owners should check, from the service team at Weatherford BMW in Berkeley.
Where should I service a BMW M3 or M4 in the East Bay?
Service an M car at an authorized BMW center that follows BMW's Condition Based Service schedule, uses genuine parts and can perform the M-specific 1,200-mile running-in service. For newer models, scheduled maintenance under BMW Ultimate Care runs 3 years or 36,000 miles. M owners in Oakland, Berkeley and across the East Bay can book the running-in service or a pre-track inspection at Weatherford BMW on Ashby Avenue. Note at booking how the car is used, especially track days, so the inspection matches the wear.
M models share a badge but not a single maintenance profile. A twin-turbo inline-six coupe, a plug-in hybrid V8 wagon and a performance SUV wear their brakes, tires and fluids differently. The common thread is that BMW's service intervals assume the car will see hard use, and every M owner has to decide how much harder than "normal" their own driving is.
Today's BMW M Lineup and What Powers It
The engine family tells you a lot about a car's maintenance profile. The S58 inline-six and the S68 V8 cover most of the current US M range.
| Model | Engine | Service notes |
|---|---|---|
| M2 | S58 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six | Same S58 engine family as the M3 and M4, so oil and ignition service follow the same platform |
| M3 Competition sedan | S58 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six | Offered with rear-wheel drive or M xDrive; xDrive cars add a front axle and transfer case to the drivetrain |
| M4 Competition coupe and convertible | S58 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six | Staggered tires mean front and rear wear on separate schedules; convertibles add a top mechanism to inspect |
| M5 sedan and M5 Touring | S68 4.4L V8 plug-in hybrid | Adds a high-voltage plug-in hybrid system, so service needs a center equipped for hybrid high-voltage work |
| X5 M and X6 M Competition | S68 4.4L V8 with mild-hybrid assist | More weight than the M cars, which loads brakes and tires harder per mile |
| XM | S68 4.4L V8 plug-in hybrid | Plug-in hybrid high-voltage system plus SUV mass: watch brake and tire wear |
| X3 M50 (M Performance) | 3.0L inline-six | M Performance rather than full M; follows the standard X3 service program |
Engine families per BMWBlog's lineup coverage. The M3 Touring is not sold in the US.
One change to note for 2026 builds: BMW has introduced "M Ignite" pre-chamber ignition for the S58, along with a higher compression ratio and new turbochargers, phasing into M3 and M4 production from mid-2026 with output unchanged. If you are comparing an early-2026 car with a late-2026 car, ask which engine revision it carries.
The Running-In Period: The First 1,200 Miles
A new M car's first 1,200 miles set up the engine, transmission and differential for the rest of its life. BMW M's own running-in guidance breaks it into two stages, followed by a dealer service.
- First 620 miles (1,000 km) Vary engine and road speeds. Keep the engine below 5,000 rpm and road speed below 105 mph, and avoid kick-down, full-load acceleration and Launch Control.
- 620 to 1,200 miles (1,000 to 2,000 km) The limit rises to 6,000 rpm and 130 mph. Keep varying load rather than holding one steady speed for long freeway stretches.
- The 1,200-mile running-in service BMW lists a 1,200-mile running-in service for M models only as part of BMW Ultimate Care. It is the point at which BMW clears the car for its full performance envelope. Book it before your first track day, not after.
Summarized from BMW M's published running-in guidance. Your owner's manual is the final word for your specific model and build.
Bay Area driving makes the first stage easy to get wrong in both directions. Stop-and-go traffic on I-80 never varies the load enough, while an empty stretch of I-580 tempts you past the limits. A mix of surface streets and steady-but-varied highway miles is the profile BMW is describing.
What BMW Ultimate Care Covers on an M Car
Included for 3 years / 36,000 miles
- Engine oil and filter service
- Brake fluid service
- Vehicle check
- The M-only 1,200-mile running-in service
Not included
- Brake pads and rotors, including carbon-ceramic pads and discs
- Tires, which M cars use quickly
- Wear from track or competition use
Ultimate Care follows BMW's published program terms. Coverage is triggered by the car's own maintenance system rather than a fixed calendar. That is Condition Based Service (CBS): the car tracks elapsed time and how it has been driven, then tells you when oil, brake fluid and inspections are due. On an M car, aggressive driving brings those reminders forward, which is the system working as designed.
How the main items are triggered and covered:
| Item | When BMW calls for it | Covered by Ultimate Care? |
|---|---|---|
| 1,200-mile running-in service | Once, at about 1,200 miles (M models only) | Yes |
| Engine oil and filter | When CBS shows it due, based on time and driving conditions | Yes, within 3 years / 36,000 miles |
| Brake fluid | Time-based, shown by CBS | Yes, within 3 years / 36,000 miles |
| Vehicle check | When CBS shows it due | Yes, within 3 years / 36,000 miles |
| Brake pads and rotors | As worn, often sooner with track use | No |
| Tires | As worn | No |
BMW does not publish one fixed mileage for M oil changes, because CBS sets the interval from how the car is driven. Your dashboard and the My BMW app show what is due next. Because the brake components that wear fastest on an M car sit outside the plan, budgeting for pads, rotors and tires is part of owning one. Genuine M brake and wear parts are available through our parts department.
Street Use vs. Track Use
Most M cars spend their lives on the street, where CBS handles the schedule. Track days change the math: a single session can use as much brake and tire as weeks of commuting. Plan service around how the car is actually used.
Street-driven M car
- Follow the CBS reminders on the dashboard
- Have tire wear checked at every service
- Keep brake fluid on BMW's schedule
- Watch for warning messages rather than waiting for a visit
Track-driven M car
- Inspect pad and rotor thickness before each event
- Check brake fluid condition; track heat ages it faster
- Look over tire tread and sidewalls after every event
- Check fluid levels and look for leaks after a hot session
Read the racing and competition exclusions in your BMW warranty booklet before a track event, and ask your service advisor how a planned event could affect a future claim. Northern California drivers have three well-known road courses within driving range: Sonoma Raceway, Thunderhill Raceway Park and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. For instruction in a controlled setting, BMW's Performance Center West at The Thermal Club in Southern California runs M schools on its own road course.
M Drive Professional
Offered on M models including the M3 and M4. It bundles M Laptimer, M Drift Analyser, 10-stage M Traction Control and M Track Mode, which are useful for logging how hard the car is actually being worked.
Carbon-ceramic brakes
A BMW service bulletin filed with NHTSA says squeal and groan noises from M Carbon ceramic brakes are a known characteristic that does not affect performance or durability. Replacing parts will not remove them.
Staggered tires
The 2026 M3 and M4 Competition run 275/35R19 tires in front and 285/30R20 at the rear. Front and rear can't be rotated, so each axle wears on its own schedule.
Recalls and Campaigns for Current M Models
Two recent actions cover S58-powered M cars. Both are fixed free at an authorized BMW center, and you can check any VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup.
| Campaign | Models | Issue |
|---|---|---|
| Emissions recall 25E-A03 (June 2025) | M3 (G80) built November 2021–January 2025; M4 coupe and convertible and M2 built January 2022–January 2025 | Engine-control (DME) software update |
| Safety recall 25V643 | A small number of 2026 M4 models built in July 2025 | Positive battery cable connection at the power distribution box may be out of specification, with a risk of stalling or fire |
If an M car has changed hands, don't assume the previous owner had campaigns completed. Ask us to check open campaigns when you book your next service.
The Last Generation of the Current M3
According to BMWBlog, BMW of North America's product planning team has confirmed that 2027 is the final model year of the G80 M3 sedan. Its send-off for this market is the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter, a North America-only, rear-wheel-drive car with a six-speed manual and 476 hp, starting at $108,450 in very limited numbers. The exact production end date has been reported differently and is not officially fixed. Reported successors, an electric M3 and a later gasoline model, are not expected to offer a manual.
A G80 kept on BMW's schedule, with a documented service history from an authorized center, is the car that holds its appeal as the generation ends, so keep every service record. If you are shopping for one while they last, browse our new BMW M inventory.
